And because we were five people, I was doing project management, but also engineering, procurement and logistics... But it's been fun. I've learned from a lot of different areas. You’ve worked across a diverse range of industries. I got super in tune with a lot of the stuff that's inside a battery storage container and all the different cabinets that we were building fire suppression for. Shoals actually reached out to me for this battery storage position focused specifically on an electrical cabinet. I pulled the trigger because I wanted to be a part of a bigger part of the industry. What you guys are doing is using batteries and inverters to provide a very unique service that solves a very unique problem that AI data centers have, and that is their volatile power draw. We, as Shoals, are building the connective piece, the DC combiner, that connects your batteries to these two inverters that you are using to solve that unique problem.\" ",{"type":279,"attrs":305,"content":306},{"textAlign":180},[307],{"text":308,"type":277},"LW: \"That's right. The famous DC cabinet. What Shoals brought to the table was very ample experience in the DC industry, which is something that not a lot of companies have. It was actually very hard to find someone with the experience. What we also found with Shoals that was very beneficial for us is a very process-focused approach to manufacturing, to developing, to design. That enabled a very quick mass production timeline and also the desire of Shoals to come into the data center industry and jump into this crazy market and crazy opportunity. Conversations between our procurement team and your sales team. Conversations between my logistics team and your logistics team to make sure that the production dates are being followed, the ship-out dates are the ones that we have on record, that the equipment actually got to the site. So, it's a lot of coordination between these companies to get equipment to the site at the required specifications, quality, and schedule.\" ",{"type":271,"attrs":330,"content":331},{"level":273,"textAlign":180},[332],{"text":333,"type":277},"Q: For someone who’s never heard of a DC combiner, what is it, and why does it matter here? ",{"type":279,"attrs":335,"content":336},{"textAlign":180},[337],{"text":338,"type":277},"KP: \"It sits between your battery and your power conversion systems. If you think about the energy flow, you have the grid and that grid is feeding energy through a PCS. That PCS is actually connected to the DC combiner, then that combiner is connected to a battery. That battery’s energy flow then comes back from the battery through a second inverter connected on the other side of this DC cabinet, and that inverter is connected to the AI data center.\" ",{"type":279,"attrs":340,"content":341},{"textAlign":180},[342],{"text":343,"type":277},"LW: \"So it basically sits between the two power conversion systems and the battery.\" ",{"type":279,"attrs":345,"content":346},{"textAlign":180},[347],{"text":348,"type":277},"KP: \"Correct. In the AI UPS case, we're taking two inverters and connecting them to one battery. And I think a very clear problem was, well, no inverter has a way to connect to another inverter unless it goes through some sort of cabling. What we did is we offered that solution, all while also offering the connection to the battery. I think the other big problem that we were experiencing together was the available short circuit of this system is magnitudes higher than what we have typically seen. And I think that's just the nature of what this AI UPS is being used for. These available short circuits were extremely high and we had to build our system to withstand.\" ",{"type":279,"attrs":350,"content":351},{"textAlign":180},[352],{"text":353,"type":277},"LW: \"The DC industry in general is not as used to higher currents and higher short circuit currents with stand for even DC switches or DC fuses.\" ",{"type":279,"attrs":355,"content":356},{"textAlign":180},[357],{"text":358,"type":277},"KP: \"Yeah. And so how we design the fuses, how we design the actual enclosure – those were all things that we were working on together. It was a custom product and I think it needed to be. We can't just rinse and repeat one of these standard recombiners that we're building for microgrids or DC-coupled energy plan applications. We needed something in the U.S. We needed something here in our backyard that we could really start to deliver quality product with. Having a facility in the U.S. as big as this helps us maintain a lot of control, helps us become more creative in what we're building, and more importantly, it helps us move a lot quicker. I mean, you and I both know that this AI data center industry is moving at the speed of light, and we need to move with it. Having that in our backyard is super helpful. Shout out to U.S.A.\" ",{"type":279,"attrs":375,"content":376},{"textAlign":180},[377],{"text":378,"type":277},"LW: \"I think that what they're facing is basically a lot of material shortages because everyone needs material at the same time, which is tomorrow, and the industry and the supply chain can handle only some. Data centers are competing amongst each other to get equipment, to get transformers, to get cable even, to get steel. You kind of want both, right? You want the new, final engineered solution, but you want it fast. And I think balancing the priorities in that sense is the main cause of friction or the main cause of conflict internally.\" ",{"type":279,"attrs":380,"content":381},{"textAlign":180},[382],{"text":383,"type":277},"KP: \"But in order to build that data center that supports the grid while also having the amount of compute that it has inside of it, you need to have some sort of power generation to back that up. And that's why I think the product that you guys are building is amazing. A lot of them are coming together to solve a lot of civil problems that, you know, you and I probably don't think about on a day-to-day basis.
