Crusoe to deploy 5GW of ON.energy's AI UPS systems across data center portfolio
AI data center developer Crusoe has partnered with energy systems firm ON.energy to deploy 5GW of ON.energy's AI UPS technology across multiple hyperscale data center campuses. Commissioning of the UPS systems will commence in 2026 and continue into 2027. Crusoe said that the deployment is in reaction to the unique power demands of AI training workloads, which the current grid struggles to manage. ON.energy's medium-voltage UPS is designed specifically for AI data centers, sitting in between the power sources and the data center itself. The company said it decouples facilities from the grid, allowing them to ride through voltage faults without disconnecting, while also preventing internal GPU load swings from reaching the grid. According to ON.energy, the system, launched in October of last year, can store enough energy to power an AI data center campus for extended periods, which it contends reduces variability on the grid during peak hours. Crusoe said the AI UPS has been validated against Texas grid provider ERCOT's large load interconnection requirements. “Hyperscale AI is introducing power quality dynamics the grid was never designed to handle,” said Alan Cooper, co-founder and CEO of ON.energy. “AI UPS is built for this moment. It keeps data centers online through disturbances while ensuring the grid sees stable, predictable behavior. Together, we’re proving that Crusoe’s energy-first approach is more than just a slogan, it’s a true competitive advantage.” Chris Dolan, chief data center officer at Crusoe, said: "We evaluated the full landscape of power solutions with one priority in mind: reliability at hyperscale for the data center while ensuring stable, predictable behavior for the grid and the communities around these campuses." Launched in 2018 as a cryptomining business, Crusoe has pivoted to developing data centers offering AI cloud services. The company divested its crypto operations in March 2025. Crusoe has plans for a 1.8GW campus in Wyoming, a 1.4GW site in Texas, two sites in Missouri, and natural gas-powered data centers in Alberta, Canada. It recently backed off from a project in Cheyenne, Wyoming. It was recently named as a potential partner for a project in Nebraska.
